Merton Living Wage Employers
“The London Living Wage is an hourly rate of pay, currently set at £13.15. It is calculated independently to reflect the high cost of living in the capital, giving a worker in London and their family enough to afford the essentials and to save”. – www.london.gov.uk
In February 2023, Merton Council became a Living Wage accredited employer. This means that as well as paying all our employees and agency workers at least the London Living Wage (LLW) – something we’ve been doing since 2013 – we’ve put a plan in place to ensure all our contractors are also paid at least the LLW or the Real Living Wage (RLW) if the work is carried out outside of London.
The LLW, which currently stands at £13.15 per hour, is independently set by the Resolution Foundation, who have their work overseen by the Living Wage Commission. These calculations are based off the real-life costs that we all face to come up with the figure that’s required to meet everyday needs.
Merton has reached out to local businesses to encourage them to join us in becoming a Living Wage accredited employer. The current cost-of-living emergency has made it clearer than ever that employees in Merton – especially the lowest paid – need their wages to keep up with the rising costs in their lives.
